What UEFA have said about multi-club ownership as Girona join Man City in Champions League

Girona have secured their place in next season’s Champions League, marking their first appearance in the competition and completing a remarkable turnaround.

However, their participation in the Champions League raised concerns due to their affiliation with City Football Group (CFG), which also owns Manchester City, another Champions League-qualified team.

UEFA’s regulations concerning multi-club ownership state that no individual or legal entity may have control or influence over more than one club participating in a UEFA competition.

This includes holding a majority of shareholders’ voting rights, having the right to appoint or remove a majority of the administrative or management body of the club, or exercising decisive influence in decision-making.

The presence of CFG’s two clubs in the Champions League created questions about compliance with UEFA’s rules. However, there are precedents for clubs in similar situations, such as Brighton and Aston Villa, being cleared to compete in Europe after making significant changes to their off-field structures.

UEFA may assess CFG’s control over Manchester City and Girona to ensure they meet the necessary requirements for independence.

This includes reviewing aspects such as governance, ownership, and financing to ensure both clubs operate independently of each other.

It remains to be seen how UEFA will handle the situation and what adjustments CFG might make to ensure both Manchester City and Girona can participate in next season’s Champions League.

If CFG’s ownership structure is deemed to violate UEFA’s regulations, one of the clubs could face exclusion from the competition.
