VAR explains yellow card decision on Romero’s challenge on Ederson

Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero avoided a red card for a late challenge on Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson during their Premier League clash.

The incident left Ederson forced off with a head injury, sparking debate about the on-field decision.

Broadcasters received an explanation from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) regarding the yellow card shown to Romero.

Peter Drury, commentating for Sky Sports, revealed VAR’s reasoning: “Reckless from Romero. The leading leg misses the goalkeeper but it’s the hip that makes contact with Ederson’s head.”

Sky Sports initially avoided showing replays due to Ederson’s concerning state. Once he recovered, replays were shown. While a nasty collision, Gary Neville viewed it as accidental with Romero attempting to reach the ball.

Following a concussion check, Ederson was replaced by Stefan Ortega, much to the goalkeeper’s frustration. This potentially indicates Ederson will miss Manchester City’s final game against West Ham United.

Neville concurred, suggesting a concussion could sideline Ederson for up to three weeks. Ederson’s absence could see Ortega make his fifth Premier League start of the season.
