Manchester City is anticipating the return of midfielder Kalvin Phillips to the City Football Academy after a challenging loan spell at West Ham United.

Phillips, an England international, sought increased game time during the January transfer window, with hopes of securing a spot in Gareth Southgate’s European Championships squad.

However, his time at West Ham was fraught with in-game errors and limited playing opportunities, exacerbated by a calf injury that has now ended his loan spell.

According to the Evening Standard’s Malik Ouzia, Phillips is slated to return to Manchester City at the start of next week to resume his rehabilitation.

Despite initial discussions of a potential permanent move, both City and West Ham failed to agree on terms for an option to buy included in the loan deal.

With Phillips set to return to Manchester City, the club is expected to pursue a direct replacement for the midfielder in the upcoming transfer window.

Additionally, they will explore options for a permanent transfer for Phillips, with Leeds United emerging as a possible destination if they secure promotion to the Premier League.

However, Phillips’ high wages could pose a challenge for potential suitors in any transfer negotiation. Nonetheless, Manchester City remains committed to facilitating his departure while also strengthening their midfield options for the future.
