Manchester City gain advantage as key players return early from international duty

Manchester City received a positive update ahead of their pivotal clash with Arsenal as Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias were released early from international duty with Portugal.

Pep Guardiola’s side are in the midst of a historic treble chase, currently competing in the Premier League title race (3rd place), the Champions League quarter-finals, and the FA Cup semi-finals. However, their path to glory is far from smooth, with a crucial Premier League clash against Arsenal looming next week.

Despite boasting an impressive 22-game unbeaten run, City find themselves precariously positioned in the table, trailing leaders Arsenal and second-placed Liverpool by a single point. The early return of Silva and Dias offers a much-needed opportunity for rest and recovery for the influential duo.

Out of the 16 City players called up for international duty, news from Portugal brought a wave of relief. Both Silva, who contributed two assists, and Dias, who anchored the defense, were instrumental in Portugal’s convincing 5-2 victory over Sweden on Thursday.

However, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez opted to rotate his squad and experiment with new players in preparation for Euro 2024. This decision resulted in eight players, including Silva and Dias, being released early.

“We have eight players arriving for the second game,” Martinez stated. “It’s important to work on different concepts… Bernardo [Silva], Ruben Dias… are leaving.”

This development provides a significant advantage for Guardiola. With the crucial Arsenal fixture approaching rapidly, he can now ensure two of his most important players have over a week to rest and recuperate. The news is particularly reassuring as there’s no indication of injury for either player.

While City will monitor the performance of Matheus Nunes, who impressed with a goal against Sweden, in the next Portugal match, the early return of Silva and Dias offers a significant boost to their title aspirations. The rested duo will be ready to hit the ground running when Arsenal visit the Etihad next week.
