Man City forced to change transfer plans because of UEFA’s Champions League rules

Manchester City is facing a significant dilemma in the transfer market following Girona’s unexpected qualification for the Champions League.

Girona, partially owned by the City Football Group, secured a top-four finish in La Liga, which has prompted City to reconsider their transfer strategy.

The Premier League champions had initially planned to loan promising youngster Claudio Echeverri to Girona in January 2025.

Echeverri, who currently impresses in the Argentine league with River Plate, was earmarked for a temporary move to Girona.

However, UEFA regulations prohibit loan deals between Champions League clubs with shared ownership, compelling City to reassess their plans.

Despite City’s £12.5 million investment in Echeverri’s acquisition, they now face the challenge of finding an alternative destination for the talented defender.

Talks have reportedly commenced with Spanish clubs such as Real Sociedad, Real Betis, and Las Palmas regarding a potential loan agreement for Echeverri.

However, uncertainties loom over Girona’s participation in the Champions League due to potential conflicts of interest stemming from shared ownership with City.

UEFA’s regulations aim to prevent clubs with common owners from competing in the same competition, raising questions about Girona’s eligibility.

While City and Girona await UEFA’s decision, Echeverri’s future hangs in the balance. The defender’s impressive performances under the guidance of ex-City star Martin Demichelis at River Plate have garnered attention, with Demichelis reportedly playing a role in Echeverri’s recruitment by City.

As City navigates these complexities, they must adapt their transfer plans to comply with UEFA regulations while ensuring Echeverri’s development continues unhindered.
