Former Everton chief warns Man City for potential expulsion from the premier League

The potential punishment for Manchester City over their alleged financial breaches has taken a sharp turn, with former Everton CEO Keith Wyness suggesting “expulsion” is now a very real possibility.

Wyness, a veteran football administrator who currently runs a consultancy advising elite clubs, spoke on the latest episode of Football Insider’s “Inside Track” podcast. The 66-year-old highlighted the significance of a recent development in the ongoing saga.

“For the first time, I’ve noticed the word expulsion cropping up in the report from Nottingham Forest’s hearing,” Wyness stated. “City must be noticing that for the first time, as well.”

Manchester City were hit with a staggering 115 financial charges by the Premier League last year, covering a period of nine seasons. While the case is yet to be heard by an independent commission, with a potential hearing date set for 2025, the recent punishment handed to Nottingham Forest seems to have shifted the landscape.

Nottingham Forest received a four-point deduction for a single, minor rule breach. However, a 52-page document released by the independent commission handling their case, comprising legal and financial experts, explicitly states that “expulsion” from the Premier League can be a consequence of a major breach.

Wyness sees this as a clear warning for Manchester City. “We don’t know yet, and they’ve got every right to plead their case, but expulsion does seem to be on the table given the severity of what’s supposed to have happened,” he said.

The lack of a formal hearing and the absence of publicly available evidence leave the situation shrouded in some uncertainty. However, Wyness emphasizes the urgency of a resolution. “We need to get it going sooner rather than later,” he concluded.

This news comes amidst separate reports suggesting Manchester City have postponed contract negotiations with one of their star players. The potential expulsion scenario adds another layer of complexity to the club’s future, both on and off the field.
